Italy’s Most Beautiful Village Might Surprise You

Few destinations in Europe capture the imagination quite like Militello Val di Catania, a small Sicilian town that has recently gained national recognition.

Crowned “Borgo dei Borghi” (“Village of Villages”) by Italy’s national broadcaster, Rai Italia, Militello Val di Catania earned the top spot in 2025 through a popular television program that celebrates the country’s most charming small towns. The show travels across Italy each year, highlighting places known for their history, traditions, and culinary heritage—and this time, Militello stood out above the rest.

Tucked away in southeastern Sicily, the town is home to just over 6,600 people. Its streets reveal a picturesque landscape of golden-hued palaces and elegantly curved churches. Bell towers mark the rhythm of daily life, while balconies adorned with wrought iron overflow with colorful flowers. Surrounded by gentle green hills, the entire setting feels like a film scene.

Militello’s roots stretch back to ancient times. Its name is thought to derive from the Latin phrase “militum tellus,” meaning “land of soldiers,” possibly referencing a Roman military presence in the area. Following the devastating earthquake that struck Sicily in 1693, the town—like many others—was rebuilt in a unified style characterized by elaborate details, warm tones, and dramatic flair.

This remarkable reconstruction, which reshaped the town into a masterpiece of Baroque design, led to its designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2002. Today, Militello Val di Catania stands as a layered testament to its past, where centuries of history converge in a radiant, unmistakable architectural identity.
